WHAT group staging ‘Nunsense’ in Kearny
In their continuing efforts to bring theater back to West Hudson, the West Hudson Arts and Theater Company (WHAT) will present their rendition of the classic musical “Nunsense” at Grace Methodist Church in Kearny.
Director Joe Ferriero said the comedy will be a great way to kick off the summer.
“It’s a really, really funny show that I thought the town and the community would really like,” said Ferriero. “It’s got a good story to it but at the same time, it’s really honestly one of the funniest shows I’ve ever read.”
The play focuses on the Little Sisters of Hoboken who discover that their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters. In dire need of funds for the burials, the sisters decide to put on a cabaret show to raise money.
Nine local actors play the eight nuns and Father Virgil.
“The cast is hilarious,” said Ferriero. “They’re a really good group of people – all very professional and just a lot of fun. They’ve only had a six-week rehearsal period for this and I’ve never done a musical in just six weeks but they’re working extremely hard to get it perfect.”
Assisting Ferriero are choreographer Michele Sarnoski, who is one of WHAT’s founders, and music director Lisa Ball, a teacher at Franklin School who heard about the company’s plans and immediately wanted to get involved. Along with the cast, Ferriero says the two women have been making musical magic.
“The musical numbers are fantastic. The actors are wonderful, the singing is phenomenal and these people can really belt,” he said.
WHAT President Jerry Ficeto had high hopes for the show and added that he was proud of how far their company has come along since its inception last year.
“Since many of us have been involved in theater companies for a long time, we’ve been able to avoid a lot of the pitfalls new companies would maybe fall into. We’re being very specific and methodical in everything we do,” said the Kearny native. “I am absolutely thrilled at the progress we’ve made in a very, very short time.”
“Nunsense” will show at the Grace Methodist Church, 380 Kearny Ave., Kearny today at 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18, $15 for students/seniors with ID. Group rates are available.
